Hi, I’m Ali with Berry Happy Bodies to chat a smidge about relaxing during the holidays.
One way to get into a peaceful mindset is to receive a massage. You can either decrease the stress about gift giving by giving loved ones a gift certificate, or treat yourself to one. Or even better, both!
The biggest roadblock I hear to receiving a massage is the cost. However, during this time of year there are frequently discounts through Groupon or Living Social. And remember you can’t take care of your loved ones, if you are not taking care of yourself.
Here are some common questions I receive:
This will be my first massage what kind should I get?
A relaxing more gentle massage. Some spas label this as the Swedish massage. You should ask, or look in their brochure. In Europe the Swedish massage is actually really aggressive.
I would avoid getting the Deep Tissue out of the gate, especially if you have pain. Most people are sore after their first massage, so it’s best to start on the lighter end and see how your body responds.
Should a massage be painful?
No, at any time a massage feels too strong you should speak up and let your therapist know. You won’t hurt their feelings. On a pain scale of 10 being Emergency room pain, you should never pain beyond a 6 or 7. Or you end up contracting your muscles and resisting, which is not very relaxing ;). Your Massage Therapist should know ways to work deep into the muscles without causing you pain.
Should I tip? How much?
Most gift certificates do not have tip included. A common tip is 10 to 25%, depending on how much you liked the whole experience.
Remember there is a therapist out there for everyone so if you don’t like the style of one particular therapist you should try another down the road.
