Decluttering your space, whether it’s at home or at work, isn’t exactly an exciting task to do, but don’t you just feel better when it’s done? You are finally able to breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of a clear, organized space. That is because decluttering your physical space actually impacts your mental space, too.
When you are surrounded by clutter and chaos, your body will actually secrete the stress hormone, cortisol. An organized, clutter-free space helps to put your mind (and body) at ease and allows you to better focus. As the popular saying goes, “clutter in your physical surroundings will clutter your mind and spirit”.
Why Do We Have So Much Clutter?
Clutter and disorganization tends to make us feel anxious, frustrated or even out of control. Often, there is a deeper reason for holding on to all this “stuff”, though. Do you really need any of it or is it a symbol for something else? Are you holding on to things because of a deeper meaning? Is the chaos of your home reflecting the chaos within your mind?
Letting go and ridding your environment of unnecessary clutter can be a very emotional, therapeutic thing for people. Removing all that old, perhaps negative, energy and making room for the new and fresh can completely shift a room’s impact on your spirit.
Decluttering: It’s More Than Just Moving “Stuff”
Decluttering has the ability to create both mental and physical space, breathing renewed energy and clarity into your life and removing any stale, negative energy that may be hanging on within those unnecessary piles.
While the act of decluttering may not sound that appealing or like something you want to spend your time on, it can actually help free up more of your time and add peace of mind to your day. Think about it. How much time do you spend sifting through your clutter to find things? How do you feel when you walk into a room of disarray? By spending a little time organizing and perhaps even purging your space of some things you’ve been holding on to, you will save yourself time and frustration in the future.
How To Get Started
In feng shui, decluttering is the first priority because, if energy can’t flow freely in a space, you can’t improve anything else there. While it can seem like an overwhelming task at times, keep it simple and use these steps to make decluttering something manageable.
- Start Small
Thinking about decluttering your entire life can feel overwhelming. Why not just start with one closet or a couple cabinets in one room? It took a long time to create all that clutter. It’s going to take more than a day to rid yourself of it- and that’s okay!
- Set Aside A Little Time Each Week
An accumulation of clutter happens over time, perhaps even years. You likely won’t be able to reorganize your entire home or office in one day. Setting aside even just 20 minutes twice a week can make a noticeable difference and, over time, your clutter will be no more.
- Find The Deeper Reason For Your Clutter
Why did you hang on to all that stuff to begin with? There is always a deeper meaning for our clutter. If you don’t address the root cause for holding on to so much unnecessarily, it will surely just reappear in the future.
- Consider Donating Items
This can help people who have a hard time letting go of things. The idea of throwing away something perfectly good just because you don’t need it just doesn’t sit well with some people. This is where donating can be a great help.
I make it a habit to purge my closet at least twice a year and donate any clothes I haven’t worn. While I’d like to hold on to those clothes “just in case”, I feel better knowing someone in need will get to make much better use of them. The same can go for blankets, books, toys and furniture.
Here’s to a more organized, more at peace you!
