There are a few lessons I learned from my experience as a Burlesque performer:
1. Self-tanner and glitter are both messy yet necessary. My body truly look glowing and hot. With this show I fulfilled a long-lost dream of being made into an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras.
2. I HEART Arts and Craft. One of my favorite things about the class was learning how to make my own costume. In my head I had this vision that I am in a Project Runway episode with Tim Gunn mentoring me along the way. I loved my Friday expeditions looking for parts of my outfit from the materials, the trims, the base pieces, the shoes. Then putting it all together. I heart my yellow glue gun.
3. Owning my beauty. Before the show, I wore next to nothing when it comes to makeup. The whole process of putting make-up just intimidated me. How am I supposed to apply it? What if its noticeable that I don’t know how to put it on? Who do I think I am to wear red lipstick? Yet I did it. I learned what questions to ask, I discovered stores like MAC and Bloomingdale’s that will have patient staff who would teach me tricks of the trade.
4a. Eclectic support system who was present in the show. From my Shrink Session peeps, my old work colleagues, Mama Gena’s Sister Goddess network, my recovery peeps. Well I was just surrounded by a crowd full of love! I realized how lucky I am to be fully supported.
4b. For the other large network of sorority sisters, friends, more recovery, Shrink Session peeps, trainers, sponsors that weren’t able to make it yet still showed their support through email, Facebook messages, text and phone calls.
5. BIG LESSON ALERT! This is the lesson that took so long to sink in. When it comes to goals regarding my body and weight, what works for me is to move away from the number and focusing on actions that encourage me to move my body more and more. In preparation for going on stage, I eliminated 50% of my recreational sugar intake, I was working out on a regular basis at least 5 to 6 times per week. I felt beautiful from the inside out.
What’s next? I am planning to take a few more burlesque classes. My intention for 2012, is to work on doing a solo 3 minutes long performance.
