I am excited for today’s guest Rebecca McLoughlin. She is the founder of Beautiful Living from the Inside Out and an interior life designer. I have been following her blog for a few months and I have to say it’s the perfect dose of inspired action when it comes to creating a space that you love.
One of my personal projects for this coming year (my birthday is in a couple of weeks) is to do some major editing and upgrade to my home. Can’t wait to share with you the progress.
I am an interior life designer, founder of Beautiful Living From the Inside Out and a California girl who loves sunflowers and the sound of the ocean . My work is all about helping people create new, more meaningful and authentic relationships with themselves and their space. The truth is creating a conscious relationship to our space is the most elegant path I’ve found to transforming our whole lives.
Over a decade ago, my sink was full of moldy dishes, there were piles of laundry everywhere, and my desk drawers were brimming with crumpled post-it notes and endless dead pens. I was in a deep funk, and my life was as messy as my apartment.
It took me years, but I finally realized that my home mirrored my inner world. Acknowledging the connection between my inner world and outer world was the major key that unlocked everything for me.
Tending to my space became an act of self-care and self-love. And over time, through the ups and downs and twists and turns of my life, I learned that my internal and external spaces reflect and support each other — in profound, beautiful, and surprising ways.
Today, space is an integral and joyful part of my life. My husband and I have created a functional, beautiful space that authentically reflects who we are and where we’re headed.
Thankfully, I now have a home where I can live, breathe, grow and celebrate. Ultimately, it has been my own journey that has led me to teach about this work and inspire others to harness the power of their environments as well. My work is work is deep, creative and so much fun! I absolutely love it!
Can you share a bit about your philosophy on how our space around us reflects the space within us?
I would love to! Most simply…..Space Matters!
I believe the relationship we have with our environment is a powerful, often neglected aspect of being human. The spaces we live in are visible, livable metaphors for our inner worlds. They reflect our beliefs, our priorities, our values, our interests, our relationships, our blocks, our pain, our shame. Your space holds a wealth of information, completely unique to you and your life. It tells a story about your past, your present, and your future.
When we are in an unconscious relationship with our space, our homes may mirror things that no longer serve us: outdated versions of ourselves, unhealthy priorities, stuck-ness, perfectionism, unhappiness. Despite our best efforts to grow, our homes keep us tethered to exactly what we’re longing to leave behind.
Creating a conscious relationship to the space around us opens a whole new world of nurturing support in our lives. A beautiful, well-intentioned home reflects your true self back to you. It holds you through life’s lows and celebrates you through life’s highs.
Beautiful Living from the inside out is directly connected to your sense of health and happiness and ultimately flows from a deeper commitment to self-care, self-worth and self love.
What advice would you give to women who crave living a richer/full life?
I think one of the most fulfilling ways to experience a rich and full life is to create a relationship with beauty!
I am on a mission to bring beauty back into our homes and our lives. In our cold, busy, modern world we have forgotten the value of beauty. We’ve lost appreciation for color, design, flow, and harmony.
When we surround ourselves with beauty, we strengthen our connection with our natural essence, our passion, and our purpose. We see our truest, highest selves reflected back to us.
Beauty truly is our spirit in disguise. My advice would be to pay attention to what you find truly beautiful. Big or small, tangible or intangible…it doesn’t matter. What matters is that it lights you up…makes you incredibly happy and inspires you to live more fully from the inside out. The truth is wherever you find beauty, you’ve also found a source of comfort, hope, and self.
What’s your go to Morning Ritual (Routine)…
My morning ritual usually includes opening our bedroom windows, lighting a candle, some kind of reflective meditation (this could be journaling, walking, or a guided audio) and physical activity. I am a huge fan of getting out of the house first thing in the morning to get some fresh air and move my body. Lately pilates, dance and long walks at the beach have been my movements of choice. When I start my days embodied I tend to have a much greater capacity to stay present and enjoy life.
What are your go to self-care tools and experiences that restores you to your best self?
Currently the self care tool that most quickly brings me back to myself is the conscious and continual act of slowing down and creating spaciousness.
Spaciousness in my body.
Spaciousness in my home.
Spaciousness in my calendar.
Spaciousness in my life.
When I feel spacious everything just flows more easily for me. I get more done. I experience more joy and relaxation. I am more intentional and overall just have a much greater capacity to be compassionate, kind and loving to myself and others. Life is SO much better this way! 🙂
